Tour itinerary

1. Franz Josef

We start your journey from the tranquil town of Franz Josef, as we make the journey towards the garden city of Christchurch.

2. Lake Ianthe

Lake Ianthe, a pristine glacial gem, nestles in a picturesque trough carved by ancient ice. Encircled by rolling hills and lush podocarp forests, this tranquil body of water boasts a rich ecosystem.

At its southern end, a vast flax swamp adds to the lake’s ecological diversity. The lake serves as a sanctuary for an impressive array of wetland birds, most notably the endangered Great Crested Grebe.

Lake Ianthe hosts one of New Zealand’s largest populations of this elegant water bird, making it a crucial habitat for conservation efforts.Geologically, the lake is embraced by a moraine, a testament to its glacial origins. Its waters find their way to the sea through Ianthe Creek, which feeds into the mighty Wanganui River, creating a vital link in the region’s watershed.

3. Hokitika Gorge

Our first destination is the hidden gem of Hokitika Gorge, known for its striking turquoise waters and lush native bush. This enchanting gorge is a favorite among nature enthusiasts and photographers for its unique beauty and unforgettable vistas.

4. Hokitika

Experience the laid-back atmosphere of Hokitika, where nostalgia and natural beauty converge. Enjoy lunch and a stroll along Hokitika’s wild beach, where black sand meets the rugged coastline. Our guides allow ample time to explore this “cool town” and its many offerings.

5. Greymouth / Train Station

Our guide will drop you at the Information center for your train towards Christchurch.

Located in New Zealand’s South Island, Greymouth is the largest town in the West Coast region, with a population of around 14,000 people. Nestled amidst rugged cliff tops, wild beaches, and the tranquil Grey Valley, Greymouth is a picturesque destination on its own, and also serves as a hub for connecting to Christchurch on the east coast via the renowned TranzAlpine train.

6. Christchurch / Train Station

As your train arrives to the station, you will see our van there waiting for you! Our guides will drop you at our designated city locations before our goodbyes.
